embers and customers of Sequatchie Farmers Co-op celebrated the cooperative’s 92nd anniversary September 19 in conjunction with the store’s annual Customer Appreciation Day. Sequatchie Farmers holds the distinction of being the first Co-op farm supply store built in Tennessee. Incorporated on September 27, 1932, the original store heralded the Co-op farm store movement in the state. Built by the railroad tracks where Citizen’s Tri-County Bank now sits, the store was one of six Co-ops started during the Great Depression by insightful farmers who needed a steady, dependable source of quality supplies in their area. Located in the center of scenic Sequatchie Valley, the store was rebuilt in 1967 to offer more space, and now is located just a few blocks over at 502 Heard Street. Among those on hand to celebrate the festivities were Dunlap Mayor Clint Huth; Co-op board members Gary Pope, Gene Barker, Ben Condra, Charlie Housley, Bryan Gray, and Charlie Barker; Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Janis Kyser and Chamber Vice President John Harmon. Also in attendance was Co-op Manager Cason Turner and Assistant Manager Holli Tays, along with the Co-op sales and warehouse staff and numerous patrons who came to enjoy the grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, refreshments, and a celebratory cake. “We are so thankful for all the people in the community who have stopped by to celebrate our anniversary,” said area farmer Charlie Barker, a board member since the early 1980s. “We appreciate all our customers and thank them for trading at our local store.”
